In many ways, America is the land of plenty. But for 1 in 6 Americans, hunger is a reality. Many people believe that the problems associated with hunger are confined to small pockets of society, certain areas of the country or certain neighborhoods, but the reality is much different.
Right now, millions of Americans are struggling with hunger. These are often hard-working adults, children and seniors who simply cannot make ends meet and are forced to go without food for several meals or even days.
Nearly 1 in 3 Central Valley children are hungry today. It might be one of your children's classmates. It could be a playmate down the street. It maybe one of the thousands of children affected by a recent layoff of a parent or guardian. The effects of hunger on these children are devastating. They often suffer from a lack of focus, gradually falling behind at school. For many, the situation feels completely hopeless.
In our immediate neighborhood around the Valley Dream Center, nearly 100% of families recieve food assistance. More than 64% live well under the poverty level. Families do not have money to purchase coats for the winter or school supplies. Nutrition is poor and most families do not eat a balanced meal and rarely consume fresh fruits and vegetables.
